Saab expected for BMW engines

Spyker Automobiles has reportedly struck a deal with BMW to supply engines, according to Automotive News. These new powertrains would replace those provided by General Motors, as the giant automaker withdraws from its purged brand. In the BMW 3 Series, the diesel engine delivered 28 mpg overall in our tests.
The 328i with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine returned 23 mpg overall. And for more verve, there is the twin-turbo six with 300 horsepower. Reliability for 3 Series engines has been well above average the past few years. Coming from a competing car line, these engines are the most natural fits for the Saab 9-3. By outsourcing the engines, Saab would save considerable money in development and manufacturing that would have to be amortized over a rather modest sales volume.

Saab enthusiasts may argue that small-displacement turbocharged engines have defined the brand in recent decades. Yet, the reputation for frugal luxury that a professor would approve of, the current 9-3 with a turbocharged four-cylinder matches the base 3 Series with 23 mpg overall. And the 9-3 jogs 0-60 mph in 8.0 seconds, compared to the 3 Series' sprint in 6.9 seconds. The 3 diesel is even quicker, hitting 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.

Future Jeep pickup truck, Dodge Viper to dealers - Chrysler

Car enthusiasts and even casual shoppers always want to know, "What's next?" Idle curiosity and fuel for automotive passions are legitimate reasons for wanting a peek at the new hardware. Usually, auto shows satisfy this need but with Chrysler having been rather mute about future product during the last auto show season, consumers are left wondering.

As part of the automaker's restructuring, Chrysler has been rather open about its plans for imminent product freshening, redesigns, and restyling. It just hasn't shown much to the public until this past month with the revised Chrysler Town & Country, all-new Dodge Durango, updated Jeep Wrangler, and tease of the freshened Sebring, recast as the 200. Now, word has it that dealers were shown two notable concepts at a recent meeting that give insight into future Jeep Wrangler pickup and a next-generation Dodge Viper.
The concept vehicles were presented last week at the 2010 Chrysler Dealer Show in Orlando, Florida, according to Automotive News. The event was attended by more than 75 percent of Chrysler Group's 2,314 U.S. dealers. In follow-up calls, Chrysler refused to comment, unwilling to confirm or deny the report.

Redesigned for the 2007 model year, the current Jeep Wrangler marked a dramatic size increase over from the preceding model. Its larger dimensions and styling were foretold by the 2005 Jeep Gladiator concept, a striking green pickup truck that made the show circuit. Could a pickup variation join the traditional Wrangler and the Wrangler Unlimited? It sounds plausible. The Wrangler is currently the best-selling Jeep model based on August figures, and at the moment, it is outsold by only the minivans and Dodge Ram pickup truck within the Chrysler Group portfolio. Building on this success with a new variation would make sense. The idea has historical precedent with the old Cherokee-based Comanche, CJ-8 Jeep Scrambler, and recent JT military-spec variant spun off the Wrangler Unlimited with a five-foot bed.

TomTom provide Update GPS devices

With the latest group of portable navigation devices (PNDs) from TomTom, we were surprised to find they did not score as well as past units. We are posted the ratings last week, along with ratings on the latest Garmin and Magellan navigators. We have since learned that TomTom has issued an update to the XL 350, XXL 550, and XL 335 series devices that promise to address some concerns.

Owners are able to connect their navigators to an Internet-connected computer and use TomTom Home to install the updated operating system. TomTom advises that devices will be on retail shelves by mid-October with the update.

TomTom portable navigation devices feature a simplified menu structure that is intended to aid usability, but the update eliminates some frequently used routing options and other controls typically found on higher-scoring TomTom devices, such as multi-destination routing and directions list. Further, most of these devices have no option to adjust brightness or make changes to other common settings. The real concern is that the display washes out in bright sunlight.

TomTom says that with the update, the operating system now includes:
  • Route summary screen
  • Change route feature
  • Brightness settings option
  • Display preferences option
  • Updated volume control menu

2011 Honda Odyssey minivan

I drove to Honda's introduction ride-and-drive event yesterday for the 2011 Odyssey minivan with a combination of anticipation and dread. With the current Odyssey at the top of our minivan Ratings, you wonder if they made a good thing better or if they messed it up.

But there was another part to this. I just bought a 2010 Odyssey for my household. Over $5,000 off sticker and strong resale, even for our less-than-concourses 2005 Odyssey, helped push the purchase. Plus, I knew that the last year of a body style means the bugs are usually worked out. But in true Honda fashion, details on the redesign were sketchy

Nissan Leaf lease details revealed

High expenses facing early buyers of the Nissan Leaf. For example, people are finding that having a charging dock installed could be more expensive than they bargained for. Now those buyers are also learning the details of Nissan's advertised $349-a-month lease deal.

That price sounded too good to be true, especially for a $33,000 car. Digging a little deeper, we found that to get down to that $349-a-month, three-year deal requires the $7,500 income tax rebate and a $1,999 capital cost reduction, the leasing equivalent of a down payment. Other extra costs include a $595 acquisition fee and a $395 disposition fee. That adds up to a total out-of-pocket cost of $15,553. Aside from the tax rebate, the deal is structured like a traditional lease.
